Powders and Bulk Solids -
Behavior, Characterization, Storage and FlowPowders and Bulk Solids, 2nd ed.

(2nd edition, 2021)

About this book

The book concentrates on powder flow properties, their measurement and applications. These topics are explained starting from the interactions between individual particles up to the design of silos. A wide range of problems are discussed - such as flow obstructions, segregation, and vibrations. The goal is to provide a deeper understanding of the powder flow, and to show practical solutions.

In the first part the fundamentals of bulk solids flow are outlined: particle-particle interactions, stress, friction, strength, density, flow properties and methods of measurement, shear testers and other test procedures, specific properties of powders and how they are influenced by moisture, temperature, and flow agents.

The second part deals with the application of the flow properties in the design of properly working bulk solid containers like bins, silos, and hoppers. Other topics include: the technical design of silo walls, feeders, discharge aids, inserts, the assessment of stresses in silos, segregation and how to avoid it, and vibrations or shocks occurring in silos.

Written for:
Professionals handling or producing powders: in chemical or pharmaceutical industry, in building materials, automotive, power plants, agriculture, waste management, recycling; scientists in these fields

Pulver und Schüttgüter - Fließeigenschaften und Handhabung Pulver und Schüttgüter, 4. Auflage

(4. Auflage 2019)

von Dietmar Schulze

Sprache: Deutsch

Andrew Jenike  - Founding Father of the Science of Bulk Solids Storage and Flow Andrew Jenike Cover

(1st edition 2026)

by John W. Carson, Ph.D.

Language: English

This book describes the life and career of Andrew W. Jenike, who was born in Warsaw in 1914 and, after World War II, laid the foundations of bulk solids engineering at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. His most important achievements were a method for determining the flow properties of powders and bulk solids based on physical parameters (the Jenike shear tester) and an approach for determining the wall inclination and outlet dimensions of hoppers to achieve reliable flow (e.g., mass flow, no arch or rathole formation).

The book contains many contemporary photographs of Jenike’s experimental setups and projects, as well as of the many people who worked with him, were inspired by him, or learned from him. The names of many of these individuals can still be found today in the reference lists of reputable publications on bulk solids engineering.

The author of the book is John W. Carson, who worked with Jenike at “Jenike & Johanson, Inc.” starting in 1970. Thanks to his observations, memories, and collected images, the book offers a wonderful journey into the origins of modern bulk solids engineering.

The book was published by Kindle Direct Publishing and is available on Amazon.
